With all of the Changes happening right now in Social Media on Facebook, Google Plus, Instagram, etc… now more than ever You need to get clear on Why You are in Social Media ?

What do You want to be know as ?

Who Are You ?

What are Your Passions ?

What is the Message that they will be left with after they view your Pages ?

We need to be diligent on Checking our settings across all platforms at least once a month.  We need to go thru our Friends list, do they still have a profile pic, or are they spam.  What are your friends posting on their walls ?

And… Are You getting your Numbers in Social Media thru Authentic means or are You sooo attached to a number that You are abusing automation and Empire Avenue Missions etc… ?   I want to address this because it has become a major issue about what is authentic and not.  At the end of the day is what you are doing creating actual relationships that become friendships and business relationships that create collaborative efforts and ending in monetary gain or are You just so into Social Media and are addicted to having massively high numbers that it is actually doing the reverse and repelling people from following your feeds, and un-friending etc….

When I hear people saying they have bought followers and that they just follow people blindly it truly makes me cringe.  I did an experiment with that a long time ago, and it was a nightmare, most of those paid followers aren’t even real people or didn’t even know they were on some list to be added etc…  they had been hacked and just added without their consent.

I know lots of  people that have very high numbers in Social Media Scores-Klout, Kred, EA, and they have achieved that thru Quality Content, Engagement across the platforms they have chosen to focus on.  Do You think famous speakers spend all day on Social Media ? No…. They may send one or two motivational tweets or Pic quotes, Blogs posts on their Facebook.  There numbers are still high because of the ENGAGEMENT… Meaning actual comments and shares.

Think about this… You have bought followers… You have followed thousands of people blindly without looking at their profiles…  What has that done for you Engagement wise ? Have they actively Engaged, Commented, Shared Your Content… What is the point of having 10,000 +++ hits a day to a website if nothing happens when they arrive ? Furthermore, if somebody is telling you they get x amount of Unique visitors to their site etc… are those the ACTUAL numbers ?  From an experiment we did, we found a few people’s claims to not be factual, when we had someone further investigate the person’s claims, 85% of their traffic was SPAM comments etc… Not true authentic comments, engagement traffic.

Would you rather have 10,000 Raving Walking ambassadors fans, talking about You, Engaging, Referring or 200,000  in which 85% was not authentic, not engaging, and Spam ?  Now obviously, if somebody is a Star or famous, they may have a million followers that are raving fans, and are massively engaging and sharing – like famous singers, actors, TV personalities etc…

There has been massive conversation about Klout, Kred etc…  Are they important or Not ? If  YOU are Actively getting engaging comments, shares, Your scores will be higher.  One Caveat to that…  The Social Media Platforms are ONTO gamification so if they see massive Likeathons, or repeated rapid fire postings etc… they don’t take that as seriously as genuine Engagement which is MORE THAN LIKES… and You will start to see notifications popping up that says You can’t do that right now, come back later.

So let’s talk a bit about Social Media Groups: Social Media Groups do serve a Purpose when done with Integrity. If You have a Social Media group, and You all are sharing, commenting and not just liking that is engagement.  If You have a group and all everyone is doing is LIKING  that is NOT a Collaborative Engaging group and what is the point ?

Another Example: Going to a Page where I cannot share or Post and or all I see is Pictures, mind You they might be Gorgeous Pictures, my next thought is are they a photographer ? However, if the person’s page is just Awesome pictures with no comments and then other people from their social media group shares their photos in the same manner then you will have over let’s say 10 pages with the exact same photos, on those 10 other people’s pages- how boring is that ?  The point of Social Media Groups and Collaboration is to share content, provide valuable comments and feedbaack that is appropriate to your pages and… gives VALUE to those that visit your pages.  Therefore we need to CREATE More original CONTENT… and share with balance to our page’s niche and or theme.

Social Media is engagement- if People cannot share or engage on your page what is the point… Hence why they are settings.  For example in FB You can say all tags to be approved, their is a setting for foul language.   On your blogs there is Moderate all comments.  On YouTube there is moderate all comments. If You want engagement You need to create the ENVIRONMENT that speaks PLEASE ENGAGE.  There are plenty of famous people that allow comments on their pages. If You can’t afford a Virtual Assistant to help moderate your pages, get an intern.  There are plenty of creative ways to allow people to post and engage and have them moderated as well.

Personally there is nothing worse than going to a page and all I see is the person’s sales items, seminars, pictures, and it is all about them.  Everything is balance… I don’t care if it is Your personal profile page or your business page, there is still a balance.  Social Media is about being Social not a Sell-a-thon.  Yes post your lasted blog post, yes post when you latest seminar is…. and  post about Tips, things of Value, some Humor, some Personality, some Empowerment, some Inspiration.  Get Creative… Think outside of the box in terms of How to get people truly engaged.  Don’t just post..’This is Cute, Like, Share”  Engage them with a quality question that gets them thinking.

Let’s keep the “SOCIAL” In Social Media…

Love this post Carly, you said it so well. EA is good for getting noticed and extra traffic however not for hiking your numbers up for the sake of it. That is annoying too.

Agreed Miriam… EA Is great and does serve a purpose when done for the right reason with the right intentions

I’ve limited the platforms I’m active on … so I can be genuinely active on the ones I choose. Somehow, that seemed like a more logical strategy to me …

Agree Sharon, that Choosing a few and focusing on them is the way to go.

Serving your real fans is the key to success. Great content that appeals to your prospects and customers is the way to go. What good is it to have hundreds or thousands of fans who don’t really exist or have little interest in your topic?

    • Carly Alyssa Thorne March 13, 2013 at 8:29 am #

Absolutely Agree Lynn… Content, Quality and building Your Tribe that care and know You is the way to go
